Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiology

An exercise physiologist (EP) is an allied health professional who specialises in the benefits of exercise to help patients improve their health, well-being and function. They also specialise in the treatment of a variety of cardio-metabolic and neurological conditions through the use of exercise.

Exercise physiologists are much more than personal trainers. In order to become accredited as an EP, you must have a university degree and complete a large amount of clinical hours under the supervision of a clinical professional, much like a physiotherapist.

It might be helpful to think of EPโ€™s taking up the space between personal trainers and physiotherapists. After an injury, you may see a physiotherapist for a certain amount of time who will prescribe you exercises and get you moving better again, but you may not feel comfortable going back to the gym yet with a full exercise program under the supervision of a PT. This is where an EP can help with specialised exercise prescription and knowledge about the body and how it moves and adapts.

Healthy movement isnโ€™t about overhauling your routine , itโ€™s about small, consistent habits ๐Ÿ’™

Here are 3 you can start today (and make the most of the spring sunshine while you do ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒž):
๐Ÿ‘ƒ Nose breathing = calm & efficient
๐Ÿšถ Two 10-min walks = energy + mobility (bonus points if you bring your dog ๐Ÿถ)
๐Ÿง˜ Desk stretches = goodbye stiffness

โ„๏ธ Ice baths can be a powerful recovery tool โ€” but only when done correctly.

Hereโ€™s the sweet spot ๐Ÿ‘‰
๐ŸŒก๏ธ 10โ€“15ยฐC water temperature
โฑ๏ธ 10โ€“15 minutes duration

Anything colder or longer doesnโ€™t necessarily mean better results โ€” it can actually reduce the benefits.

๐Ÿšฟ Donโ€™t have access to an ice bath? Try a cold shower or ocean swim instead!

๐Ÿ’™ Always listen to your body โ€” if you feel unwell, stop immediately
